چکیده
D1IFER.ENT aluthors have reported several cases of congenital extern-al ophtlhcllmioplegia, some of which were myopic. No one, how everl, hlas l)aid special attention to tlis occurrence. Familial externial ophtlhalmiioplegila has been reported as inherited in two forms: dominiianlt and recessive. The fact thalt all our cases witll oplhtllmllrnoplegia w-ere myopic, the spet itil form of transmission of the pathological gene, and the presence of a numtbtler of stigmata in the affected subjects and in the carriers of the j)athologi(al gene, are the most interestinig feattures of our conmiimunication. The ophthalmological picture of our four patients is strikingly similar in all (Fig. 1). They present the following characteristics (1) Complete bilateral ptosis. (2) Almost complete, or complete, bilateral external ophthalmoplegia.' Slight lateral movements are obtainable in some of them, but they are scarce and do not reach 20°. (3) Divergent squint is present in three cases (III, 4; III, 6; IV, 5), and convergent squint in the other (IV, 6). (4) The pupils are eccentric, dyscoric, and anisocoric. The light reflex is normal in seven eyes and absent in the eighth. The accommodative reflex is very difficult to obtain because of the lack of convergence and the existence of high myopia. (5) Myopia of high degree in the three older patients and of slightl degree in the youngest; fairly good visual acuity without glasses (because of the stenopeic slit produced by the ptosis) only X ery slightly improved by their use. (6) Myopic fundus alterations (staphvlomata and Foerster-Ftuchs macular spot). Of the living male subjeects, onlyonle (IV, 3) has normal eyes (Fig. la) two other FIG (a). IV 3. Normal male. afflicted males died, one in early childhood (IV, 7), the other at the age of 46 years. (Generation II). The genealogical tree (Fig. 2, p. 664) shows that most of the men are phenotypically affected, and that all the women are phenotypically

Study on KAL1 Gene Mutations in Idiopathic Hypogonadotropic Hypogonadism Patients with X-Linked Recessive Inheritance
Idiopathic hypogonadotropic hypogonadism (IHH) is a condition caused by low doses of hypothalamic gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) leading to absence or incomplete sexual maturation. One of the disorders leading to IHH is Kallmann syndrome which is characterized by GnRH deficiency with anosmia or hyposmia. This disorder generally occurs as a hereditary syndrome with X-linked recessive inhe...

much better for the author to have selected fewer topics for inclusion in the book, and to have given each one a more thorough treatment. Other subjects which are scantily covered include evidence for a myopia gene, existence of an alcoholism gene, genetic transmission of psychotic tendency, relation of creativity to the schizophrenia gene, and inherited personality and creative aptitude. As ca...

PURPOSE To predict the progression to legal blindness in patients with isolated inherited retinitis pigmentosa. METHODS This retrospective study evaluated patients with isolated inherited retinitis pigmentosa for age at onset, duration of the disease, and best-corrected visual acuity in an Asian Indian cohort. The Mann–Whitney U test was used to analyze the variables. RESULTS Of 134 patient...
متن کاملThe autosomal recessive variety of congenital stationary night-blindness with myopia.
Congenital stationary night-blindness associated with myopia may be transmitted by two types of inheritance: X-linked recessive (Worth, 1906; Nettleship, 1909 and 1912; Kleiner, 1923) and autosomal recessive (Nettleship, 1912; Vogt, 1923; Gassler, 1925; Akiya, 1935; Merin et al, 1970). There are only a few reports of either variety. The present paper describes a family where 3 sibs are affected...
متن کاملPolg and Other Mitochondrial Disease Relevance for Psychiatry
ver the last decade, novel mitochondrial genetic diseases have been identified in which mutations in DNA polymerase γ (POLG [MIM 174763]) gene are involved. POLG1 is the only DNA polymerase in human mitochondria and is essential for mitochondrial (mt) DNA replication and repair. It has to be stressed that functional genetic variants of POLG are present in about 0.5 percent of the normal populat...
